Black Myth: Zhong Kui vs Wukong: Every Confirmed Difference

Game Science has confirmed a handful of concrete differences between its two Black Myth titles. Everything beyond them — combat depth, story connections, engine details — remains unannounced.

Short answer. Officially: Zhong Kui is the second Black Myth title, inspired by Zhong Kui folklore rather than Journey to the West; shows a new protagonist and setting; is in early development without a release date; and uses the same business model as Wukong. No story link, combat comparison, or engine detail is confirmed.

Why compare the two titles at all?

Black Myth: Wukong is the confirmed first entry of the series, and Zhong Kui is its confirmed second entry. Readers deciding what to expect naturally ask what carries over.

This page keeps a narrow promise: it lists only differences Game Science has stated or visibly established in official material, and marks everything else as not yet announced. For the relationship question itself, see Is Black Myth: Zhong Kui a sequel to Black Myth: Wukong?.

Confirmed difference 1 — the source material

  • Wukong is built around Journey to the West and the Monkey King.
  • Zhong Kui is inspired by the demon-queller Zhong Kui of Chinese folklore. Game Science names him as the project’s primary creative inspiration.

This is the cleanest official difference: two different figures from Chinese tradition, with different story worlds around them.

Confirmed difference 2 — the protagonist and setting

The Zhong Kui reveal CG and gameplay trailer show a new cast and an Underworld-tinged setting — a bearded, tiger-riding figure matching published artwork, a swordsman protagonist, and demon-realm environments. None of this overlaps visually with Wukong’s cast.

Who the swordsman is remains officially unconfirmed.

Confirmed difference 3 — development status

  • Wukong is released and playable.
  • Zhong Kui is in early development. Game Science describes all shown footage as work-in-progress, and no release date, platforms beyond a broad PC-and-major-consoles direction, price, or pre-order has been announced. The release-date status page tracks this continuously.

Confirmed difference 4 — what has been said about the business model

The official Zhong Kui FAQ states the project will use the same business model as the previous Black Myth title — that is, premium single-player rather than live-service or free-to-play. It is the only officially stated commercial comparison between the two games.

What is NOT officially compared

None of the following has been stated by Game Science, and this page will not fill the silence with guesses:

  • whether Wukong’s stance, spell, or transformation systems return in any form;
  • engine, technology, or mod support;
  • story continuity — cameos, timeline, or the Destined One;
  • co-op or multiplayer;
  • a length or scope comparison.

When Game Science publishes direct comparisons, this list will be extended with the quoted wording.
